The Maticoor Night (also known as Dig Dutty) is a soulful and high-energy Guyanese Hindu tradition held on the Friday evening before the wedding to invoke blessings for the couple’s new foundation. Traditionally led by the women of the family to the rhythmic beat of tassa drums, the ceremony begins with a vibrant procession to a clean patch of earth to perform Dharti Puja (prayers to Mother Earth). Upon returning to the “wedding house,” the couple participates in deep-rooted Vedic rituals and the Hardi ceremony, where they are anointed by loved ones with a cleansing turmeric paste to symbolize purification, joy, and prosperity.
